On July 23, 2024, the Consul General of Japan in Seattle, Makoto Iyori, and his wife hosted a “Tomodachi Reception” at their official residence in Seattle for the U.S. Army, which has been held annually since 2011. The top-ranked 100 soldiers from Joint Base Lewis McChord were invited to the reception this year.
After the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, Joint Base Lewis McChord deployed 24,000 U.S. troops, 189 aircraft, and 24 ships in the largest bilateral operation between Japan and the U.S., according to the U.S. Pentagon. The U.S. Army played a pivotal role in search and rescue efforts, debris clearance, and the restoration of vital services.
Seattle Special District conducted tea ceremonies during the reception. U.S. Army Lieutenant General Xavier T. Brunson was invited as a first guest. All of the guests enjoyed the Chanoyu Hospitality. It was a great opportunity to reach out to these exceptional soldiers so that the friendship between Japan and America grows with the next generation.
在シアトル日本国総領事館で立礼式茶会
シアトル特別地区では、様々な会場での市民茶会やプレゼンテーションで茶道普及に努めている実績から、在シアトル日本国総領事館より公邸においてお茶会のご依頼をいただき、開催いたしました。
今回は、在シアトル日本国総領事館が開催される「トモダチ・レセプション」と呼ばれる行事においてお茶会を開催しました。「トモダチ・レセプション」とは、2011年に発生した東日本大震災に日本に一番に上陸、救援に駆けつけて下さったルイス・マッコード合同基地の皆様への深い感謝と強い絆づくりを目的としておられます。在シアトル日本国総領事公邸では、ルイス・マッコード合同基地の陸軍・空軍関係者と二世退役軍人会のメンバーや沿岸警備隊の関係者、当地シアトルのコミュニティー関係団体の関係者の皆さま１０７名が出席し、ガーデンパーティーを開催されました。茶会は、公邸の広間を会場に設えて、立礼式で催しました。
初めにお茶の歴史や抹茶の効用、千利休が大成した茶の湯についてご紹介しました。続いて、目の前でお点前の所作をご覧いただきながら、手順ごとのご説明をいたしました。そして、ルイス・マッコード合同基地の司令官ブランソン氏と中将にお茶を差し上げました。その後、ご出席の皆さまに、点て出しで、お茶のひと時を楽しんでいただきました。お点前の様子がとてもていねいな所作で美しいと、多くの皆さまに取り囲まれ、大変興味深くご覧いただきました。亭主がお客さまのために心を尽くしてお茶を点てる茶の湯にとても感激していただきました。総領事ご夫妻からも慰労のお言葉を頂戴いたしました。茶の湯を通して、参加された皆さまとの文化的交流が図れ、シアトル特別地区が米国と日本のかけ橋の一助になれたことをとても嬉しく思います。
