This meeting was the first Penn State Tea Club workshop for this semester. About 21 new members attended, a much larger number than any of the students had expected. Three students who are studying German and, in fact, were German attended.
We divided the group into two parts, one taught by Eiko Suzuki how to make tea at the table by themselves, and the second taught by Stephanie Benefield how to make tea on the tatami mat. They were all excited about starting the new year.
新セメスターの最初のクラス。今までのクラスで最も多い21名が参加。まずは1客1亭での作法をデモンストレーション。そのあとに2つのグループに分かれ、畳の部屋でお点前のお稽古、テーブル席で自分でお茶を点ててみるWorkshopwo行う。「普段から日本茶を飲んでいて、お抹茶というものに興味をもった」「茶筅をたまたま入手したが、ちゃんとしたお抹茶の点て方を知りたかった」という理由で参加した人が多かった。中には「濃茶」に興味を持った人が数名おり、今セメスターのクラスを通して少しでも多くの人が薄茶点前をマスターし、濃茶に挑戦できるように講師も心して導いていきたい。
