On May 25, 2023, Fort Hamilton High School (FHHS) in Brooklyn, NY, hosted a "Nodate" event with around 20 attendees. The FHHS Tea Ceremony Club, founded in March 2023 by Nancy Tso, a current student and member of the Domonkai, has been learning the Omotesenke style since the age of eight under Ms. Keiko Kitazawa. When the tea ceremony club was established, the other club members had no experience with tea ceremonies. However, they quickly developed their skills through weekly practice sessions and received support from Saori Nakagawa & Aaron Tso, who are Domonkai members and Nancy's parents. Each club member took charge of various aspects of the tea ceremony. Nancy prepared usucha, while others handled ohakobi and the mizuya. The non-Japanese students also fearlessly attempted to speak Japanese phrases such as "Osage itashimasu" and "Chodai itashimasu."
There is a proposal to make the nodate tea ceremony an annual school event. The club members aspire to gain official recognition and engage in high-quality activities as the Omotesenke-style Tea Ceremony Club at FHHS, eager to showcase their dedication and passion for this traditional art form.
2023年5月25日、NYCのBrooklyn区公立Fort Hamilton High Schoolで、五月晴れの中、野点茶会が20名ほどの参加者で開催しました。当高校の茶道部は今年3月に８歳から表千家流茶道を学んでいる同門会員の在校生Nancyが設立し、その時はお抹茶や浴衣に触れたことのない生徒たちばかりでした。毎週のお稽古を通じて部員たちは成長し、野点茶会当日には自分で素早く浴衣を着て一般在校生や先生に、茶道部員達が着付けも行いました。茶道部部長のNancyによるお点前、他茶道部員がお運び、水屋でのお菓子の準備や影点てを担当しました。日本語を話さない部員達ですが、勇気をもって「おさげいたします」と日本語で伝えてお客様のお茶碗を下げ、生徒たちは熱心に学んだことを自主的にチャレンジし、チームワークを発揮してこの野点茶会を成功させました。参加した先生や在校生も浴衣やお抹茶、正式な主菓子に感動し、茶道や「和敬静寂」の精神に大変興味を持ち、感動したというコメントを数多く頂きました。この日、学校長から署名した表千家学校茶道申請書を茶道部長が受取り、野点茶会の成功とともに今後の茶道部の希望と熱意を茶道部員みんなで再確認しました。学校長からは野点茶会開催の感謝の言葉を頂き、野点茶会を毎年の学校行事として取り入れる提案も頂きました。茶道部の活動や表千家学校茶道認定の申請の進展、校長先生より野点茶会を高校の年行事の一つにしたいとの提案など、3つの素晴らしい出来事が一度に起き、茶道部にとって最高の野点茶会となりました。
