Final Class of 2024 at Penn Sate

Event Date: 12/3/2024

In the final class of 2024, participants had the opportunity to experience koicha (thick tea). First, members practiced the preliminary steps for preparing koicha, including how to untie and retie the cords of the chaire's shifuku (silk pouch) and the fukusa (silk cloth) four-way folding technique. They also experienced an appreciation of the three utensils (san-ki) used in the tea ceremony.

Afterward, the registered students were introduced to the basic flow of a tea gathering (chaji) and the seasonal variations between the ro (hearth) and furo (brazier) periods. The formal method of drinking koicha, in which three guests share a single tea bowl, was demonstrated, and everyone had the chance to learn this practice. For the remaining participants, individual servings of koicha were prepared for their enjoyment.

Finally, we taught participants how to prepare usucha (thin tea) at a regular table setting, allowing them to compare the differences between koicha and usucha.

Despite the cold weather, approximately ten people attended the class. Using the calligraphy scroll "無事是貴人" ("A person who lives without trouble is noble") as our theme, we were able to end the last class of the year enjoyably and wish for a healthy and prosperous year to come.
